HMS CHOIRS . . . An AWESOME Job at Busch Gardens!

The choirs of Herndon Middle School performed at the MUSICALE Festival in Williamsburg, Virginia, last Friday, May 1, for a panel of three judges, and spent the rest of the day at BUSCH GARDENS. Here's what happened . . .

We would also like to congratulate the HMS Symphonic Band on their stunning achievement as GRAND CHAMPIONS, the highest scoring band of the day!

Our students had the opportunity to watch several choirs perform during the morning and were a fantastic audience. Our wonderful group of chaperones was amazed at how quiet and respectful the students were throughout the performances. They all really represented HMS well.

Great job, HMS CHOIRS!

District Festival Results: Great Job, HMS Choirs!

Herndon Middle School Select Men's Choir and Select Women's Choir performed last Friday, March 13, at the District XII Middle School Choral Festival at McLean High School. Both groups did very well, earning the second highest rating overall in performance, and the highest rating in sight-reading.

They conducted themselves admirably and were complimented on several occasions during the day by various event coordinators for their mature behavior and professional attitude (and also for their cool new uniforms!). Great job, HMS Choirs!

2009 District XII Middle School Workshop Chorus

Photo by Marty BradyDeborah Mello, Director of the Children's Chorus of Sussex County, New Jersey (Yeah, JERSEY!), was an energetic and motivational leader for the large middle school group assembled at Marshall High School for the 2009 All-District Choir on Saturday, February 14. Carol Feather-Martin accompanied on piano.

The performers entered through the aisles singing the opening piece, "Bonse Aba," a lively call-and-response number in the Zambian language. Paul Morgan of HMS was one of the 6 soloists leading the group!  Mr. Z was lucky enough to be asked to play the djembe!  It was really fun to be a part of that exciting opening number. Music of many styles followed, and pieces in French and Latin were included alongside an a cappella traditional Jamaican tune and a patriotic finale.

The High School Women's Choir, under the direction of Mary Jane Pagenstecher (beautifully accompanied by Elaine Stanford!), and the Mixed Choir, directed by Dr. Paul Nesheim and accompanied by Markus Compton, were top-notch and delivered performances that matched high energy and emotion with musical precision.  It was an exciting afternoon by all accounts.

Ithacappella in Concert at Herndon High School

Herndon High School Choir is pleased to host Ithacappella in concert at the school on Monday, January 12, 2009, at 7:30 p.m.

Ithacappella will hold a workshop with HHS choir students in the afternoon of January 12, with the concert to follow that evening.

This event, a fundraiser for the Herndon Choral Boosters organization, is open to the public.

About Ithacappella

Also known as the Ithaca College Men's Chorus, Ithacappella was founded in 1996 by four men with a love for singing and a passion for performing. Since its inception, the group has grown from its choral roots to become one of the premier male collegiate a cappella groups in the world.

Along the way, the ensemble's repertoire has expanded to include everything from traditional barbershop tunes to current radio hits. Recently the group has received several awards and accolades, including being named best male ensemble in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella and taking home awards for best soloist and vocal percussion. Ithacappella was also recently honored to share the stage with internationally renowned rock group, Incubus, performing their hit "Dig" for thousands of fans.

Though the sound of the group has evolved over the years, one thing remains constant: their dedication to putting on high-energy, fun shows for the entire family.

Visit Ithacappella's website www.ithacappella.com for info and links to videos.

Ticket Prices

$5.00 for students (age 18 and under), faculty,* and seniors; $10.00 for adults. Faculty members get one free admission.

We LOVE the HHS Madrigals!

The Middle School choral students cannot stop talking about the Herndon High School Madrigals' performance of"A Cappella Overtures" at the Pyramid Concert Tuesday night. At least it gives them something new to talk about since all last week it was about the Madrigals'"I'm a Train" performance at our after school rehearsal on Monday the 17th. There is a lot of excitement here in the HMS Choir Program and it seems that many of our students can't wait for high school. Mr. Z  just hopes to keep them here a little while longer… NICE JOB HHS!

The annual Men's Workshop Chorus is co-sponsored by the FCPS Fine Arts Office and the Fairfax County Choral Directors Association.

See more photos on the PHOTOS page! And here.

Fall Fundraiser Ends on a Positive Note!

In addition to the products we sold, we also raised over $700 in DONATIONS toward our new Choir uniforms. This is a great start.

THANK YOU to all who participated!

Choir Uniforms Coming Home with Students

Uniforms will be coming home with your child on Wednesday, Nov. 19, or Thursday, Nov. 20. Uniforms consist of a white tuxedo shirt, a bowtie, and a cummerbund (either black or red, depending on which choir your child is enrolled in).

These will be clean, on a hangar, in a plastic bag with your child's name and an information card on it. Make sure to READ THE CARD... Thank you.

Please treat the uniforms carefully and prevent them from getting damaged. Students are to wear the uniform for ALL evening performances as well as the March 13 District Festival. Shirts are machine-washable and should be returned clean at the end of the school year.

We will be holding a MANDATORY after-school rehearsal for ALL choir students on Monday, November 24, in the Auditorium (from 2:20 to 3:30 p.m.) to prepare for the Herndon Pyramid Concert the following night. This is a Late Bus Day.

This rehearsal is required in order to establish riser positions and practice the line-up, as well as to combine groups for final run-throughs. Attendance will be taken as this rehearsal is part of the students' grade. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Welcome Message from "mr. Z"

Welcome to all our new and returning students and their families. I am very excited to be joining the Herndon Middle School community and I look forward to an exciting and challenging year full of great opportunities for musical growth, learning and fun!

This is my first year as Director of Choral Music for Herndon Middle School, but I am not new to Fairfax County Public Schools or to the Herndon Pyramid, having directed the choir at Clearview Elementary for the past 2 years and taught General Music at both Clearview and Armstrong Elementary since 2005. I am excited to be here at HMS as a part of the connection between our fine elementary music programs and the superior Herndon High School Music Department.

I encourage all choral students to take the opportunity to work diligently and consistently to make the most of their choral experiences here at HMS and rise to their full potential. Students will be encouraged at every turn and extra help and advice will be given to all those who seek it. It is my hope that our choral students will take full advantage of the chance to participate in a discipline which may lead to years of rewarding experiences. Plus…it’s FUN!

Have an excellent start to the new school year and I’ll see you in choir…

– Tom Zumchak ("mr. Z")
