Course Descriptions

Beginning Choir (Chorale, Men’s/Women’s Choir)
Full Year
Grade 7 & 8 Elective
Prerequisite: Interest in choral singing.

This course provides an introduction to proper vocal techniques, music and specifically choral notation, and choral rehearsal practices. Through a variety of classic, contemporary, secular and sacred choral literature, students will experience two and/or three-part singing. Music in two or three different languages will also be explored with a focus on proper pronunciation, clear diction and inflection. Emphasis will be on an ensemble approach and a positive, cooperative attitude is essential. Required rehearsals and performances outside of normal school hours will be scheduled at the discretion of the director, and ample advance notice will be given. This course requires a student materials fee as listed in FCPS Notice 5922.

 

Advanced Choir (Concert Choir, Select Men’s/Women’s Ensemble)
Full Year
Grade 8 Elective
Prerequisite: Audition and/or recommendation of instructor.

This course offers a continuation of choral study and advanced instruction in vocal techniques, music fundamentals, and sight-reading. Through a variety of classic, contemporary, secular and sacred choral literature, students will experience three and/or four-part singing. Music in at least three different languages will be explored. Emphasis will remain on an ensemble approach and each student is expected to be a role model for our beginning students.  Required rehearsals and performances outside of normal school hours will be scheduled at the discretion of the director, and ample advance notice will be given. This course requires a student materials fee as listed in FCPS Notice 5922.
